The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
