The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
